The most noticeable advantage to zirconia is how well the material has performed over time.  Zirconia is a material with physical properties similar to steel. It is also highly biocompatible and facilitates better hygiene, as plaque does not adhere to zirconia to the same degree as older dental implant bridge materials.  Examples of this include acrylic resin, which tends to be a more porous material; whereas, zirconia is very dense.  Zirconia will not absorb as many plaque particles as acrylic resin, resulting in a more hygienic and longer lasting restoration.
